Infrastructure (2015)

Through Infrastructure I focus on the decay of physical networks.

These images illustrate Halifax’s use of viaducts, bridges and highway systems. The photographs depict different elements of transportation, focusing more heavily on automobile infrastructure. This infrastructure is critical  supporting access for the neighbouring suburbs to the peninsula that is Halifax. Due to the extreme weather conditions these roadways are constantly under repair or construction. This weather has led to aging of these structures accelerating the materials decomposer. I thought this decay paired with these monolithic structures was an interesting juxtaposition. The seemingly permanent concrete structures being destroyed but the impermanent weather.

These structures serve as both a monument to an old system of networks, while still remaining functioning. Though they are functioning I would argue that they are not functional, creating a dichotomy between their necessity and their practicality.
